Seongyojang Traditional Korean Home

Do you know about Traditional Korean House with 99 rooms...???? For me it was quite surprising.. as i never have an opportunity to visit such  a place before.  Also I heard from my guide that only the king have the right to have 100 rooms in his house. the rest of the people can have the house with 99 maximum rooms. This site is a good representation of the ancient upper-class housing style. This vast 99-kan* house is a privately-owned national cultural asset, and has been designated as the Important Folkore Material No. 5. It was created during the 11th generation of the Hyoryeong family, a royal family during the Joseon Dynasty.

The meaning of "Seon", in Seongyojang, is boat. Gyeongpo Lake was directly in front of Seongyojang at the time it was built, thus making is accessible by boat. Gyeongpo Lake at one time reached the enormous circumference of 12km. Its size has reduced by 4km over the years and its depth has decreased by 1-2 meters.

It is said that 10 generations of descendents of Naebeon Lee have continued to live at Seongyojang. KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) has selected this residency as one of the top 10 most well preserved original dwellings in Korea that was constructed over the past 300 years.

Yeolhwadang is considered the most important structure on the property, as the male owner of the property resided in this building. This structure was given the name "Yeolhwadang" in order to promote happiness and joy among the relatives living there. Presently one can see a terrace that was added on courtesy of Russia.

It has been well preserved for 300 years or for 10 generations. eolhwadang is frequently used as a backdrop for historical dramas. The interesting thing for me was the presence of LIBRARY inside the old house. I was really impressed by the way they preserved the heritage.

We had  a tour around the house.. It was so nice and well preserved areas having many facilities inside. The most important was the library an play ground. Library having around 300 thousands books, internet facility and also well sitting arrangement. The look of outside from the library is just awesome.

The play ground is also well maintained. If you look from the top of hill to the play ground it seems lovely. Also I personally think this place might be used for social gatherings as it is quite large and its location is attractive,

The look of rooms from the up hills is just amazing. I must say If some day you want to be just yourself. Visit that place and sit down on hill have a look on the house, you will feel relax of all the worries. I know you will find yourself... :) the cool breeze welcomed you and the greenery beside you give you a feeling of being in heaven.
